Celloridoo: A Unique Composite Musical Instrument

Introducing the Celloridoo

The Celloridoo is a groundbreaking musical instrument that combines the beauty of a bowed string instrument with the unique sound of an Australian wind instrument. Designed by Aidin Ardjomandi, this composite instrument offers musicians a new way to create melodies and harmonies in their music.

The inspiration for the Celloridoo came from the need to enhance the musical capabilities of the didgeridoo, an ancient instrument that is not known for its melodic range. By combining it with a violoncello, Ardjomandi has created a versatile instrument that allows musicians to fill their music with both melody and harmony.

What sets the Celloridoo apart from other instruments is its unique composition. The body of the instrument is made from maple wood coated with epoxy resin, giving it a sleek and modern look. The fingerboard is made from ebony wood, providing a smooth surface for the musician to play on. The mouthpiece, made from wax, ensures a comfortable and secure grip.

One of the standout features of the Celloridoo is its use of a bow. The bow, made from brazilwood with horsehair, allows the musician to create rich and expressive sounds on the chordophone part of the instrument. The strings are held in place by an ebony wood tailpiece, ensuring optimal sound quality.

With dimensions of 131.5 cm in height, a soundboard outer diameter of 36.0 cm, and a fingerboard length of 87.5 cm, the Celloridoo is designed to be both visually striking and acoustically impressive.

Playing the Celloridoo is a unique experience. The aerophone part of the instrument is played by vibrating the lips to produce a continuous drone, while using circular breathing techniques. The chordophone part is played with a bow, allowing the musician to create melodies and harmonies.

The Celloridoo was designed and realized by Aidin Ardjomandi in Tehran, with the process starting in July 2014 and finishing in October 2014. The instrument was created with the intention of providing creative individuals with a tool to express themselves and reach their full musical potential.

The Celloridoo has received recognition for its innovative design, winning the Bronze A' Design Award in the Musical Instruments category in 2015. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity, technical skill, and a commitment to improving the quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.

With its unique composition and innovative design, the Celloridoo is a testament to the power of creativity and the endless possibilities of musical expression.
